The Dances of South Asia

The Dances of South Asia (TDS) is SACE's largest and most popular event serving to showcase the myriad of dance styles present within South Asia, as well as guest acts from the entire Vanderbilt community. Every year, over 200 students perform in the showcase in dances such as Classical, Raas, Nepali, Pakistani Pop, and Bollywood Fusion segments. In addition to dance performances, TDS presents a fashion show that highlights traditional attire from many different regions within South Asia and a skit centered around each year’s specific theme. This event attracts over 1000 guests from the Vanderbilt and surrounding Nashville community, as Vanderbilt’s largest cultural showcase.

TDS usually takes place in November. Our past themes have included:

Garba

Garba is a traditional folk dance associated with the Indian festival, Navaratri, meaning "nine nights” that has transpired into a profound cultural celebration. In India, this dance is performed in massive group circles revolving around one another, embracing all students. To honor this celebration and share this rich aspect of Indian culture and dance with the Vanderbilt community, SACE hosts a Garba every fall to teach students the Garba dance and celebrate as a community with food, music, dance, and performances.
